IOM Information
IOM (International One Meter) model yachts are by far the most popular class of radio controlled yachts.
The class was started to enable both the amateur and professional to be able to build their own designs to compete in line with length, weight, draft and ballast.
They use 3 rigs - 1st rig for light to moderate winds (large sails)
- 2nd rig for moderate to fresh winds (medium sails)
- 3rd rig for fresh to strong winds (small sails)
Each rig is designed to be changed as quick as possible.
The overall length of the boat should be 1000mm or 1 meter.
The overall weight of the boat including batteries should not be less than 4KG.
The overall weight of the fin & bulb should not be greater than 2.5KG.
The boat has a sail drum winch (for bringing the sails in and out) and a rudder servo for steering the boat.
Racing these boats involves the exact same rules as 'big' sailing exept you sail it from the side of the pond.
You can build these yachts yourself or purchase one easily for between £200 for a competative yacht and £1800 for a state of the art yacht.
Many of those who build their own, buy a kit which can be purchased in various stages of completion and the yachts do often maintain their value.
